This symposium will present and discuss documentary practices that involve new forms of storytelling in photography and film.Presentations by artists Brett Story and Edgar Martins will focus on the use and representation of physical space as a means of constructing social and epistemic order. The symposium will explore thematic links in the work of both practitioners in their varied encounters with cultural politics, science and the geographic imagination. The event will consist of the screening of “The Prison in Twelve Landscapes” by Brett Story (2016), followed by a presentation on the ideas underpinning her work. In the afternoon Edgar Martins’ will give an overview of his photographic work and discuss his approach to developing and extending documentary practice.
